Sunscreen and sunglasses are not just for warm weather
While many people go to great lengths to ensure they are properly-equipped for winter sports by dressing appropriately and gearing up with the best new or used sports equipment, others are not properly protecting their eyes.Experts say that those participating in activities such as skiing, snowboarding, sledding and ice skating during the winter need to also make sure they're taking steps to safeguard their eyes.
Dr. Elizabeth Hakim Yates recently told AHealthierMichigan.org that the sun in the winter months can be more harmful than in the summer because it sits at a lower angle and can expose you to more ultraviolet rays. In addition, snow can reflect up to 85 percent of the harmful UV rays to the eyes, which can cause long-term damage and painful injuries.
Winter sport enthusiasts of all ages are urged to wear sunglasses or safety goggles whenever they're spending time outdoors to prevent damaging their sensitive eyes. Experts say it's important to choose eye gear that has adequate UV protection.
In addition to protecting the eyes with sunglasses or goggles, doctors also recommend using sunscreen during the winter months to protect the skin.
"Sunburn is possible even if you're cold," according to MayoClinic.com. "When you're outdoors in the winter, wear sunscreen on any exposed areas. Use lip balm that contains sunscreen, too."
