Study finds swimming can help reduce blood pressure
While experts often suggest a modified diet and exercise to reduce elevated blood pressure, a new study suggests that swimming may be the best type of exercise for those looking to alleviate hypertension.Researchers from the University of Texas studied 43 sedentary individuals with hypertension or prehypertension over the age of 50. According to MedicalNewsToday, participants were randomly assigned to do 12 weeks of swimming or 12 weeks of gentle relaxation exercises.
Although body fat, blood glucose levels and cholesterol did not change, they found that those who swam were able to significantly lower their blood pressure and improve their vascular function.
Experts say swimming is a good form of exercise for older, non-active individuals, as it does not put pressure on the joints or cause overheating.
Other popular forms of exercise that can improve health include bicycle riding, walking and playing sports.
Those who want a way to stay active year round, despite the weather, may consider purchasing used fitness equipment, such as used treadmills or stationary bicycles, to meet their exercise goals.
