Sports drinks 101
Sports drinks and nutritional bars are extremely popular for men, women and children who are playing on the field or just working on their physique. According to a recent report released by Packaged Foods, the people that consume these items vary in demographic and attitude. But not all sports drinks are created equal.
Depending on vigor of exercise, sports drinks may not even be necessary. For example, kids that are practicing football in full gear in hot, humid weather will benefit from the added electrolytes, sugar and sodium. However, kids who are practicing less intense physical activity should still turn to water. Kids should take small sips throughout practice and drink plenty of fluids after leaving the field.
Children who are going to venture outside for a long, strenuous workout should go into it well-hydrated to prevent the risks of getting dehydrated after working out. Parents can encourage the use of healthier alternatives to sports drinks, like coconut water, which contains high levels of potassium without the added sugar and sodium found in more common drinks.
