Replace technology with sports
Comedian Louis C.K. has always been known for his grouchy behavior, and he had much to say on "Conan" Sept. 19 regarding youth and smartphone use. The actor doesn't allow his daughters to have the devices, and despite his dark description of why he made the decision, his point is heard loud and clear. Parents of youth and children may want to think twice about giving them a smartphone device, but instead encourage them to join youth sports and explore the world beyond a screen.
"The number of adolescents addicted to smartphone use will increase because the popularization of smartphones is an inevitable social trend. And the younger they are, the more vulnerable they are," Jonghun Lee, a professor of psychiatry Catholic University of Daegu School of Medicine in South Korea said at a press conference.
Parents should encourage kids to spend their free time playing sports and other activities outdoors. Smartphone, television and video game addiction can cause aggression, attention deficits and depression. According to the NYU Child Study Center, kids who participate in sports are known to have higher confidence, strong relationships with peers and even better grades.
