Outdoor hockey game coming to LA in 2014
Most hockey purists agree that the game was meant to be played outdoors, and the NHL has certainly listened to its fans in recent years. In addition to the Winter Classic - the annual New Year's Day tradition of playing a game at a famous outdoor venue - a number of other al fresco contests have sprung up. But next season may see one of the most unusual when Dodgers Stadium hosts an outdoor game for the Los Angeles Kings, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Jan. 25 contest will mark the first time the NHL has hosted an outdoor regular season game west of the Mississippi River and will likely pose a number of unique challenges for organizers. According to The Weather Channel, the average temperature for Los Angeles in January is 68 degrees, but NHL and Dodgers officials say the obstacles will be well worth it.
"Dodger Stadium has been home to many unique and special moments over the past 51 years," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said in a statement. "We'll add another first in 2014 when the Dodger Stadium infield turns to ice as we host our first National Hockey League game between the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks."
Los Angeles will not be the only city to host an outdoor hockey game. The Winter Classic is slated to be held at Michigan Stadium - aka the Big House - when the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs will square off.
