Keep kids safe during the summer
Summer is the time when kids venture outdoors to play sports with their family and friends, but people who live in areas with high heat, it might be necessary to take extra precautions to keep kids safe. Whether they are enjoying recreational play or going to practice on a regular basis, kids and parents can follow these guidelines for the summer:
Kids' diets play a major role in their health while they are playing sports in the heat. Parents should make sure that kids are well-hydrated before heading outdoors, and that they have eaten a balanced meal. Fruits and vegetables contain nutrients that will keep them moving, while the water content also works to hydrate their bodies.
Strenuous activity should be done in the morning or evening when the sun isn't at its peak, if possible. Breaks should be taken frequently, preferably in the shade. However, it's important not to switch from air conditioning to extreme heat, because that will put more stress on the body.
Kids should always be properly rested before a big game or practice because heat exhaustion can be much more prevalent if kids are tired.
