Frozen Four features three first timers
College basketball's Final Four will take center stage this weekend, but another sport is also down to four teams - college hockey. The Frozen Four is headed to Pittsburgh, Pa., April 11 and April 13, and this year features three teams that are going for the first time. UMass-Lowell, Quinnipiac and St. Cloud State are all new to the Frozen Four stage, while Yale is making its first trip to the national semifinals since 1952.
The four teams - all of which have never won a national title - all feature interesting storylines. Quinnipiac and Yale, for instance, are separated by just 10 miles of Connecticut highway, and could meet for the title if each team wins its first game.
UMass-Lowell has a compelling story as well. The River Hawks are coming off their first Hockey East title, and dominated the conference that is often controlled by perennial powerhouses such as Boston College and Boston University. St. Cloud State is also a bit of a surprise, because the Huskies compete against some of the best teams in the country in the Western Collegiate Hockey Conference.
The Frozen Four begins April 11 when Quinnipiac takes on UMass-Lowell at 4:30 p.m. The title game is April 13 at 7 p.m.
