Focusing on mechanics in youth sports
Youth athletics are meant to teach children the basic fundamentals of a game so they are able to build a solid skill set over time. However, sometimes the focus is placed on winning rather than the mechanics of how to play a certain sport. While this could win games for kids at a young age, as they grow older they may not be able to compete with others who have learned those intricacies.
Developing players at a young age can not only help them play better in the future, it can protect against injury. Leaping off the wrong foot to shoot a basketball or throwing a football with improper form can wear on the muscles and ligaments over time.
At the same rate, not learning the basics when kids are young can pose issues when the time comes to try out for high school teams. Youth who are interested in competing in sports at a higher level must learn the basics when they are initially introduced to the sport. Poor habits are difficult to change as kids age, so parents should take note of any instances of odd form or mechanics.
