Encourage kids to get active on vacation
Families across the country who are trying to fit in a last-minute vacation before the kids head back to school may want to consider encouraging children to try local sports. Whether you're traveling to a tropical paradise or the thick of the wilderness, kids can benefit from going outside of their comfort zone and use these skills in sports they normally play.
Youth who normally play the same sports may suffer from overuse injuries from time to time because they are only strengthening and stretching specific muscles. This leaves other tendons to become tight and weak, a dangerous concoction for injury.
If you are traveling to an oceanfront city, encourage the entire family to try surfing or stand up paddleboarding, which utilizes stabilizer and smaller muscles. Both of these aquatic activities require core strength, balance and stamina.
Those visiting a national or state park, or just an area with plenty of options for outdoor adventure, should take advantage of the rough terrain. A run in a hilly area can work the arms, legs and core more than a run on concrete, and can be a fun activity for active families. Consider a bike ride or climbing activity as well.
