Chocolate is good for heart health

There's good news for anyone who wants to indulge in some chocolate this Valentine's Day and throughout the year.

The Denver Post reports that studies have continued to find that chocolate is a heart-healthy food.

However, experts say that choosing the right kind of chocolate is important. For example, dark chocolate is better for you than milk chocolate because it contains more cocoa and less sugar.

According to the newspaper, cocoa beans, which are used to make the sweet treats, contain heart-healthy compounds known as flavonoids.

"They have anti-inflammatory properties, which provide protection against blood clots, improve cholesterol levels and help relax blood vessels, potentially lowering blood pressure," the news source reports.

While indulging a little is ok, experts say eating about an ounce per day is ideal.

"Eating an entire large bar of chocolate may offset its health benefits even if the bar contains flavanols," dietitian Dave Grotto told the Atlanta Journal Constituion.
It's important to remember that exercise is also crucial for heart-health and an overall healthy lifestyle.

Those who want to save money on getting in shape may consider purchasing items such as used treadmills or other secondhand gym equipment.
